Travel Blog: NFL Week 16 – San Diego at Detroit

December 23-24, 2011

I officially started to write a travel blog following my last time I was in Detroit covering the preseason matchup between the Lions and the New England Patriots back in August. It truly doesn’t feel like it’s been 18 weeks since I first jotted down my experiences traveling, shooting and working for CBS Sports.

Last time, I didn’t shoot much of the Motor City because I wanted to drive to Lansing to get the state capital and I photographed the Henry Ford Museum. This trip, I journeyed across the U.S. border into Canada to get skyline shots of Detroit from the other side of the river. In fact, I did cross over three times to get day shots as well as sunset and sunrise shots.
It hovered around 30 degrees the entire trip, but it didn’t snow when I was out and the clouds were fantastic. My previous two times shooting from Canada were cloudless.

Detroit is a pretty rundown city. It’s very sad to saw the best way to look at it is from another country. While also here, I visited the site of Motown Records.
The area around Motown Records is the epitome of the ghetto with half torn-down buildings everywhere.I did shoot lots of video, but haven't had a chance to edit it.
THE GAME: Detroit 38, San Diego 10
The Lions reached the playoffs for the first time since 1999 thanks to a dominating offensive and defensive performance. QB Matthew Stafford completed 81% of his passes with three scores. The Chargers were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. This was my 185th NFL game covered with CBS and my 230th overall since 1997 when I started working games instead of attending them.
BEST SHOTS FROM WEEK 16…
Here’s a collection of my favorite images from Detroit.
