2011: A year through my lens
By Andy Lopusnak/AndysPictures.com
In 2011, I took nearly 200,000 photos using my three SLRs, two point & shoots and my phone. I covered 54 games this past year which includes 21 NFL contests, 23 college basketball games, six Arena Football matchups, three college football games and one NHL game.
My 2011 began as I concluded my first wedding shoot outside of San Francisco. I boarded a plane New Year’s Day to Houston to cover the Texans’ win over Jacksonville. Fast forward to the end of the year and I was back in Texas to do the Sun Bowl in El Paso. In between I spent nearly 400 hours (that’s about 17 days) in the air and tallied over 150,000 miles in the air. That’s enough miles to circle the globe six times. All of the travel was in North America. Aside from a vacation to Montreal, I didn’t go to an airport from April 5 to August 3; and all other flights were within the continental United States.
2011 marked the first time I covered the Final Four. I also got into photographing models and taking video with my Canon 7D in 2011. Later in this blog, you'll see my top photos, time lapses and videos as well as a complete list of all sporting events I covered in 2011.
INTERESTING FLYING TIDBITS
Most Common Flight: DL 1684 from SJC to ATL (2,116 miles). Flown 16 times. Flight
Longest Flight: DL 1138 from JFK to SFO (2,586 miles). Flown once.
Most visited Delta hub: Atlanta (19 times), Salt Lake City (16). I only connected through both cities and didn’t cover any games at either.
MY YEAR BY THE NUMBERS
0 – Number of flights flown in May and July. I did have four flights in June when I vacationed with Bethany in Montreal (award travel).
5 – New state capitals added in 2011 (Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Washington and Wisconsin).
5 – Number of double dip weekends where I covered two different CBS games in two different cities. This includes the Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve 2011 and the Jets-Dolphins game on New Year’s Day 2012.
7 – Number of different airlines flown in 2011. In addition to Delta, I flew on AirTran, Alaskan, Continental, Southwest, United and US Airways
11 – New NFL stadium time lapses added in 2011 (Arizona, Detroit, New Orleans, NY Jets, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis and Washington). This doesn’t include different angles for Baltimore, Houston and another Pittsburgh one. I did shoot time lapses of the entire NFC West in 2011. Nine of the eleven were from NFC cities.
16-5 – Record of home teams in 21 NFL games covered.
25 – Number of different states visited.
38 – Number of different sports time lapses created in 2011.
106 – Number of Medallion Qualification Segments I flew on Delta in 2011. This doesn’t include award travel or flights on any other airlines. On those 106 flights, I tallied 137,459 qualification miles.
59,598 – Amount of rollover miles on Delta. This means that for 2013 I’m already Gold for 2013 and need little more than 15,000 qualification miles to reach Platinum. I could reach this before the end of January.
76,528 – Qualification miles needed to reach one million miles flown on Delta and be in the airline’s 1M club.
